HPV                         Human Papillomavirus

Usually shows no symptoms and goes away by itself

HPV is responsible for:

  • Almost all cases of genital warts and cervical cancer

  • 90% of anal cancers

  • 78% of vaginal cancers

  • 25% of vulvar cancers

  • 50% of penile cancers

  • 60% of oropharyngeal cancers (cancers of the back of the throat, including the base of the tongue and tonsils)

Transmitted through genital contact- condoms offer some protection but not cover the entirety of the male genital

There are different HPV types:

“Low-risk" and others "high-risk"

​

Low-risk HPV types cause genital warts and do not cause cancer. Some high-risk HPV types can cause serious illness including cancer
